Protein pretzels replace some or all of the flour with plant protein, usually wheat gluten plus pea or soy protein. On the three crunchy brands we checked, protein rises from about 2.8 g per ounce in a regular hard pretzel to 10 to 16 g.
This is general nutrition information, not dietary advice.
Where the extra protein in protein pretzels comes from
The ingredient lists point to plants. Utz Protein Mini Twists add pea protein and vital wheat gluten to wheat flour. ProteinWise twists lead with soy protein isolate.
Crisp Power goes furthest. Its list opens with hydrolyzed wheat protein, then carob seed protein and soy protein isolate, with no wheat flour at all. SuperPretzel Protein, a frozen soft pretzel, adds pea protein and wheat gluten to enriched flour.
None of the four labels we opened lists whey.
The method stays classic. Pretzels get an alkaline dip of lye or strong baking soda before baking, which drives the browning behind the dark crust, as NPR’s food desk explains. Crisp Power lists sodium hydroxide, which is lye, and Utz lists baking soda.

Regular vs protein pretzels, label by label
Protein per 100 calories, our arithmetic, is the fairest way to compare a 1-ounce serving with a whole bag.
| Pretzel and serving | Protein | Calories | Protein per 100 kcal | Main protein source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular hard pretzels, salted, 1 oz (USDA) | 2.8 g | 109 | 2.6 g | Wheat flour |
| Utz Protein Sea Salt Mini Twists, 1 oz (28 g) | 10 g | 120 | 8.3 g | Pea protein, vital wheat gluten |
| ProteinWise Pretzel Twists, 1 packet (29 g) | 12 g | 120 | 10.0 g | Soy protein isolate, wheat gluten |
| Crisp Power Sea Salt, 1 bag (1.75 oz) | 28 g | 200 | 14.0 g | Hydrolyzed wheat protein, carob seed protein, soy isolate |
| Soft pretzel, medium (115 g, USDA) | 9.4 g | 389 | 2.4 g | Wheat flour |
| SuperPretzel Protein soft pretzel, 1 pretzel | 10 g | 180 | 5.6 g | Pea protein, wheat gluten |
Sources: USDA FoodData Central 167555, 169064 and 167965; panels from Utz, ProteinWise, Crisp Power and SuperPretzel via Giant Food, accessed 24 October 2026. USDA servings and protein per 100 kcal are our math.
Per ounce, the crunchy brands carry 3.6 to 5.6 times the protein of a regular hard pretzel.
Sodium depends on the brand. USDA puts a regular hard pretzel at about 352 mg per ounce. Utz Protein lists 420 mg, while ProteinWise and Crisp Power work out to about 313 and 286 mg.
Soft pretzels gain the least in grams. SuperPretzel Protein gives 10 g per pretzel; a medium plain soft pretzel already has 9.4 g (USDA). The real change is calories, 180 versus 389, partly because it is smaller.
Which protein pretzels have real protein: check the % Daily Value
Grams on the bag say nothing about protein quality. Under FDA labeling rules, protein % Daily Value is grams times a quality score called PDCAAS, divided by a 50 g Daily Value. It is mandatory once a brand makes a protein claim.
Crisp Power prints 28 g of protein at 28% DV. Worked backward, about 14 g counts at full value, so the label itself rates the blend at roughly half. Treat that as an estimate, since %DV is rounded to the nearest whole percent.
Utz’s online panel shows no protein %DV, so you cannot run that check there.
On any bag, full-quality protein shows a %DV about double the grams; a much lower %DV means a weaker blend.
Crisp Power’s 28 g a bag is the most in the table, so compare it with how the best protein bars rank. For whole-food protein instead of isolate, try our cottage cheese protein pancakes or the protein waffle nutrition per serving.
Frequently asked questions about protein pretzels
How much protein is in a regular pretzel?
USDA FoodData Central lists plain salted hard pretzels at 10 g of protein per 100 g, about 2.8 g per ounce. Whole-wheat hard pretzels reach 11.1 g per 100 g, about 3.1 g per ounce, with more than twice the fiber.
Are protein pretzels vegan or dairy-free?
Not all of them. None of the four labels we checked lists whey, and Crisp Power and SuperPretzel Protein are sold as vegan. ProteinWise contains butter, so it has milk. All four contain wheat; ProteinWise and Crisp Power add soy.
Do protein pretzels have fewer carbs than regular pretzels?
Yes, on these labels. Utz Protein lists 13 g of carbohydrate per ounce, against about 22.8 g for regular hard pretzels in USDA data. Crisp Power works out to about 9.1 g per ounce, most of it fiber. Calories per ounce barely move.
