What “Deep Sleep” Means and What the Claim Requires

Self-reported data from three studies and 197 participants found music “may have no effect on perceived sleep interruption” (MD -0.53). Objective measures across three studies and 136 participants showed no improvement over no treatment for onset latency, total sleep time, efficiency, or interruption.

The Two Lab Studies That Measured Deep Sleep Directly

Cordi, Ackermann, and Rasch tested 27 women in a 90-minute nap and found more slow-wave sleep only in participants with low suggestibility.

Kuula’s team ran a 20-person pilot across 40 polysomnography nights, a 30-minute session of Max Richter’s Sleep against slow breathing, with only a trend toward more N3. The authors called their own findings “explorative,” writing that they “warrant further replication in different populations.”

The Earworm Problem: When Music Keeps Working After You’re Asleep

Scullin, Gao, and Fillmore studied earworms during sleep. Among 199 frequent music listeners, persistent night-time earworms tracked with worse sleep quality.
