The magnesium in both bottles is the same mineral. What changes is the amino acid bonded to it, taurine in magnesium taurate and glycine in magnesium glycinate. Every marketing difference between the two traces back to that one swap.
Neither form appears on the federal list of magnesium compounds shown to absorb better than others.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements names aspartate, citrate, lactate and chloride as the forms small studies found more bioavailable than oxide and sulfate. Taurate and glycinate were not in those comparisons.
So the choice comes down to tolerance and to which secondary claim you care about, not to proven absorption.
Taurine and Glycine Do All the Differentiating
Taurine sits in high concentration in cardiac muscle and takes part in how heart cells handle calcium. That is the entire basis for magnesium taurate being sold as the heart form.
Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which is how glycinate ended up in every sleep stack on the shelf.
Both describe the amino acids studied on their own. Neither tells you what the chelated mineral does in a person.
The label will not settle it either. A Supplement Facts panel declares elemental magnesium, not the weight of the full compound, so it rarely tells you how much taurine or glycine you are swallowing.
What the FDA Actually Signed Off On for Blood Pressure
In 2022 the FDA approved a qualified health claim linking magnesium to blood pressure. The approved wording carries its own warning: adequate dietary magnesium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure, “however, FDA has concluded that the evidence is inconsistent and inconclusive.”
Products using it have to provide at least 84 mg of magnesium per serving, and supplements no more than 350 mg.
Notice the scope: magnesium intake in general. Nothing about taurate, nothing about taurine.
Compare the Elemental Number and Ignore the Rest
Both taurate and glycinate are bulky molecules, so a 1,000 mg capsule delivers only a share of that as usable magnesium. Two bottles quoting the same headline figure can therefore differ by several capsules a day.
It is the same arithmetic that lets cheap magnesium oxide bottles print an impressive number while sitting near the bottom of the absorption ranking.
The RDA is 400 mg daily for men aged 19 to 30 and 310 mg for women, and about 30 to 40 percent of the magnesium in food gets absorbed.
The upper intake level for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg for adults. Food does not count against that ceiling. Capsules do.
Choosing When Nobody Has Run the Comparison
No trial has tested taurate against glycinate head to head. Anyone telling you one wins for sleep or for blood pressure is extrapolating from an amino acid, not reporting a result.
Neither form appears on the NIH list of compounds most often reported to cause diarrhea, which is carbonate, chloride, gluconate and oxide. High doses of any form can still bring nausea and abdominal cramping.
If sleep is the real goal, weighing glycinate against magnesium L-threonate is a more useful comparison than dragging taurate in.

Does a bigger milligram number mean more magnesium?
Not reliably. Read the elemental magnesium line in the Supplement Facts panel, since the front of a bottle sometimes quotes the weight of the whole compound.
